Description

Custodian of The Cathedral of Saint Drogo The Slumbering (Patron Saint of those who lose their train of thought mid-sentence)

Appearance

Nephran is an ancient, weathered figure whose exact age has long slipped beyond his reckoning (he claims to have "stopped counting after the third war with the shadow-kings" although little history is written about this period). A retired chimney sweep and occasional grumbler. His long, tangled hair and greying beard are often adorned with bits of candle wick or dried herbs. Deep lines carve his face like the weathered stone of the cathedral itself and his pale blue eyes carry a perpetual glint of wry amusement (or perhaps too much mead). He wears common leathers frequently stained with mysterious dark splotches that smell faintly of barley and juniper, and is often seen walking barefoot complaining that his boots hurt his feet.

Role & Reputation

Custodian of Ardennes' largest cathedral - a towering marvel of limestone and stained glass that some whisper was built atop older, stranger foundations - Nephran oversees daily rites, candle-lighting and endless polishing of brass. Officially a senior member of the austere Order of The Eternal Vigil, he is far more famous (or infamous) for the Order's long-standing rumor: that their cellars produce and distribute vast quantities of untaxed, extraordinarily potent spirits across the region. The cathedral's "holy water" has been rumored to make even hardened mercenaries see visions.

Combat & Skills

Nephran rarely seeks violence - he prefers a quiet bench and a full flagon - but when pressed he can still heft the massive greatsword kept behind the pulpit (a relic said to have once belonged to a saint who "fought demons with both blade and barrel"). His swings are slow but devastating, fueled more by momentum and drunken rage that finesse. Most foes wisely choose not to test whether the old sot is truly as harmless as he appears.

Personality & Habits

A notorious tippler, Nephran frequently drinks himself into a profound stupor during evening vespers or long winter nights. When this happens, merry pranksters - acolytes, local rogues and even the occasional visiting bard - delight in relocating his snoring form to improbable places: perched atop the cathedral roof, into an unsuspecting neighbors kitchen and one time onto a rickety suspended walkway on a sheer cliff face. He wakes with a groan, a curse and usually another pull from his ever-present hip flask before shuffling back to his duties.

Despite his well documented vices (or perhaps because of them), Nephran remains strangely beloved. Pilgrims claim his rambling, half drunk blessings carry an uncanny weight, and the cathedral doors stay open to all - no questions asked, no tithes demanded...though a discreet donation of good malt is always quietly appreciated.

Nephran claims to have witnessed three miracles (and counting) which he attributes to the grace of Saint Drogo.
